The Bonded Ear Method

One of the most popular ear mounting methods in taxidermy, this technique is fast, accurate, and economical. It can be used on virtually any size and shape of the ear, regardless of splits or damage. The key to success in this method is to leave the cartilage attached to the interior ear skin as a guide in shaping the ear.

Step 1 With the ears turned to their outermost edges, wipe the cartilage and skin with lacquer thinner to remove any moisture or oils.

Step 2 Mix equal amounts of Polytranspar Lay Up Resin and Bondo. Add a 2" strip of cream hardener and stir in some fiberglass chop for extra strength. Mix well.

Step 3 Turn the ear right-side-out and pour the mixture into the ear. Use a tongue depressor to spread the mixture to the edges of the ear.

Step 4 Shape ear following the contours of the cartilage. Work out air bubbles. As mixture starts to harden, pinch the edges slightly to thin them.
