Mannikin Preparation

Fish Form Prep from Jeff Lumsden
Fish Form Prep is the first product of its kind, and offers the fish taxidermist two significant breakthroughs. It is a creamy self-drying material designed for sealing and making hand-carved mannikin surfaces smooth and durable while still being receptive to pins, yet without measurably enlarging the size of your mannikin. This product is essential for competition fish and when mounting thin-skinned or small scaled fish. The second breakthrough Fish Form Prep offers is to make commercial fish mannikin alterations practical and feasible.

Gary Bowen's Mannikin Prep
Here's one of the great taxidermy time-savers of all! Master taxidermist Gary Bowen specially formulated Mannikin-Prep to use between hide pastes and urethane mannikins. It completely eliminates the need for scratching or sanding forms. It saves you time and money, with no loss of mannikin detail! Easy to use -- just wipe the mannikin with lacquer thinner, shake the aerosol can of Mannikin-Prep and spray it on. Allow the mannikin to sit overnight in order to achieve an extra strong positive bond, then apply your hide paste and mount as usual. Mannikin-Prep works with all kinds of hide pastes -- water-based mixes or epoxy adhesives. Mannikin-Prep is ideal for game head, mammal, fish or bird taxidermy -- basically anywhere a urethane foam mannikin is used. A 17 oz. can of Mannikin-Prep will cover at least five large deer head mannikins. Cannot be shipped by air.

Polytranspar Fin Backing Cream
For almost ten years now, hundreds of game head taxidermists throughout North America have been successfully priming their mannikins with Polytranspar Fin Backing Cream. This quick and economical method is outstanding for preventing drumming between the urethane form and the skin. After sanding the mannikin with coarse sand-paper, apply a thin layer of the Fin Cream to the mannikin (just rub it on with your hands). After it dries in about an hour, you are ready to apply the hide paste of your choice and mount as usual. The skin will now conform to the detail of the mannikin without any lifting or drumming. It's fast, it's easy, and it works!
