How to Set Whitetail Deer Ears Using Sallie Dahmes Ear Base
Note: This procedure should be done under the skin. The skin has been left off in some of the photos below only for illustration purposes.
Step 1 Using a golf-ball sized portion of ear base, place it directly above and in front of the ear canal reference point (found clearly marked on all Sportsman Series mannikins). Work the mixture toward the front part of the burr of the antler. The muscle is somewhat flat in appearance on the top and more rounded on the side. Use the reference ear butt casts to help recreate this structure. |
Step 2 Form another golf-ball sized portion that will be used to create the bottom muscle. This muscle is round and has a very "full" appearance. Again check your reference material. |
Step 3 An indentation must be placed under the antler burr at the top of the ear butt. Partially peel the skin back from the earliner and force ear base material into the pocket between the earliner and the sculptured ear muscle to form a nice transition area. |
