Preservatives

WASCO Dry Preservative
This special formula contains ingredients that are safe preservatives. Good for preserving bird skins and mammal skins. Use it to absorb blood and grease during the skinning and fleshing operations. After fleshing and shaving, the skin may be soaked in a solution of one full cup of WASCO Dry Preservative thoroughly dissolved in a gallon of water. Let soak for 30 minutes, occasionally moving the hide. Damp dry with towels or a tumbler. Do not soak fish in this solution. If you wish to soak fish in a dry preservative, simply use Powdered Borax instead. Can also be used in its dry state by simply rubbing into the flesh side of the hide. (Do not wash or soak mammal skins if the hair is slipping. Use only in the dry state and allow 2 to 3 weeks for the hair to completely set before grooming.)

WASCO Aluminum Sulphate (Alum)
Aluminum sulphate is used in some pickling and tanning solutions. It is not recommended for full tanning, because of the sulphuric acid content remaining in the skin, and the lack of stretch. But a small amount of aluminum sulphate used in the salt brine will help to set the hair and make the skin easier to shave.

WASCO Puffed Borax
This product is ideal for drying and mothproofing skins and feathers. It is a lightweight version of borax that absorbs water unbelievably well. After washing, simply place the bird or mammal skin into a tumbler, cardboard box, or pillowcase containing puffed borax and roll it around for a few minutes. The results are amazing! Absorbs moisture quicker than hardwood sawdust while the residue helps to repel bugs from eating the feathers or fur. It's also great for skinning birds or small mammals. Simply cover the bottom of a cafeteria tray with a layer of puffed borax as a work area for skinning. It controls body fluids, improves your grip, keeps feathers and fur clean, and cleans grease from your fingers and tools.

WASCO Powdered Borax
Some taxidermists prefer using powdered borax as a dry preservative for birds, fish and small mammals. It's practically a necessity for most taxidermy shops. Very useful during the skinning and fleshing stages to absorb blood and grease. Borax helps to allow a sure grip on slippery tools and specimens. An excellent desiccant.
