Pickling Agents

WASCO True-Tan Acid Bath Crystals
What's the secret of a clean, white-colored tanned skin? What's the most important step to prepare the raw skin to accept and hold the tannins? The acid pickle. Pickling a mammal skin not only cleans and preserves, but adjusts the chemistry of the skin to accept the flood of tanning agents and permanently adhere them to the fibers within the corium. 2 tablespoons (the same volume as 1/2 fluid ounce) of True-Tan Acid Bath Crystals per gallon of most water will drop the pH to 2.0 -- perfect for mammal skin tanning. Safer than liquid acids which may splash on skin or eyes. Works great with the Lutan F tanning system. Neutralizes with common baking soda. More that one quart container in a package requires a UPS hazardous fee. Cannot be shipped by air.

Bascal S
This BASF Chemical is used in pickle solutions, or by itself. It has a hair-setting effect and breaks down the non-tannable protein within the skin, which produces a softer and stretchier leather.

Rittel's Saftee-Acid
This incredible new product replaces sulphuric, hydrochloric, formic, acetic, oxalic and citric acids in your tanning solutions. No fumes, no airborne corrosives, no hazardous shipping, and safe to dump. It reaches lower pH levels better than formic or acetic acids. Works great in all tanning systems. Does not readily burn the skin if washed off in a reasonable amount of time (protective gear is still recommended).

Citric Acid
Many taxidermists are switching to citric acid as their choice for a pickling agent. Good results can be obtained with citric acid in conjunction with most any popular tanning oil or tanning agent. To each gallon of water, add 1 lb. of non-iodized salt and 3 oz. of citric acid. Maintain a pH of 2 and a salt content of at least 40%. Neutralize with baking soda before rinsing, draining, and tanning.
