Fish Tanning

WASCO True-Tan Fish Tan
This is the finest tanning formula on the market for fish. An easy one-step process successfully transforms fish skin to a permanent, stable substance. To use, mix both dry chemical and the liquid component with water. Add the prepared fish skin to the solution and allow it to soak overnight. Rinse with clean water and the skin is ready to be mounted. Besides producing better, more permanent mounts, using True-Tan Fish Tan will allow the fish to dry to a much lighter color, enabling the taxidermist to paint the fish easier and more realistically. For greasy fish such as trout, salmon and char, you will also need Polytranspar Degreaser. Eight gallons of True-Tan Fish Tan solution may be used for approximately 24 average sized fish before being discarded. Contains dry chemical and liquid additive.

Knobloch's Liqua-Cure
Developed especially for fish and bird skins. Mix one part concentrated Liqua-Cure to ten parts water. This product preserves, tans, degreases, cleans and removes odors, all in one easy-to-use solution. For fish, clean the skin in a mild soap and water solution (this will help make the Liqua-Cure solution last longer and stay cleaner). Place fish skin in the solution for about four hours, stirring every now and then. Remove the skin, rinse under clear water and proceed with mounting.

WASCO Powdered Borax
Some taxidermists prefer using powdered borax as a dry preservative for birds, fish and small mammals. It's practically a necessity for most taxidermy shops. Very useful during the skinning and fleshing stages to absorb blood and grease. Borax helps to allow a sure grip on slippery tools and specimens. An excellent desiccant.
